Back to School: Talk About Underage Drinking

As students head off to college, they will gain new independence and face new challenges. For some, this may include the pressure to drink or experiment with alcohol.

College should be about making memories, building friendships, and creating a future - not putting that future at risk. Underage drinking can lead to poor decisions, academic problems, legal consequences, and other serious risks.

A Few Reminders for Students:

• It’s okay to say no to alcohol.
• You don’t have to drink to fit in.
• Look out for your friends.
• Have a safe plan for getting home.
• Know where to turn should you need help.

Parents Matter, Too

Even when your student is away at college, your conversations still matter. Make sure to talk openly about alcohol, peer pressure, safety, and the importance of making responsible choices. Let them know that they can always come to you for support.
